We sit in a hamlet at the western outskirts of Gilsland on the border of the two beautiful counties of Cumbria & Northumberland and at the western edge of the remote & awe-inspiring Northumberland National Park. Driving east 45 minutes into Newcastle upon Tyne — via the historic towns of Hexham & Corbridge - and onto the Coast. Going west - Carlisle is1/2hour away and on a little further to the Solway Coast. Once here, the honesty-bar in the comfortable guest lounge provides a well-earned drink. Our two bright, contemporary-styled bedrooms offer the facilities & services you would expect in a luxury hotel, hair dryers, TV, radio, hot & cold drinks. Our rooms are carefully designed to meet the needs of the most demanding guests after a long day walking, cycling or site-seeing. Our guests tell us that we've thought of everything, and welcome our attention to detail. Our job is to help you enjoy your visit, and we continue to work to achieve that aim.
Polished wood floors gleam throughout; there are racks for your walking boots, hooks to hang your packs, a drying room, secure cycle storage, overnight laundry; comfortable beds with duvets and crisp white linens; contemporary ensuite bathrooms with powerful showers - one with a bath tub too - , lashings of hot water and brand-name toiletries.
Relax before your exquisite home-cooked dinner with a glass of wine or a locally brewed beer in the homely lounge in front of a log fire, or on the garden terrace with magnificent views back over Gilsland toward Hadrians Wall
Environmental Statement
We know that we could probably do (or not do) more to be “greener” and be more ethical consumers. But this is what we try to do: buy local, fair-trade, free-range and organic produce as far as practically possible. Eg.we use local butchers who ensure that meat is sourced from known farms within 15 miles; local eggs, organic cheese & lamb from Slack House farm ½ mile up the road. We try to source seasonal fruit and vegetables locally. We use on-line shopping, saving at least three 50 mile car trips to our nearest supermarket. Most of our guests stay only one night so, where possible we launder your towels at 30 degrees. We line-dry - weather permitting! - and avoid the tumble-dryer though this means your towels may very fluffy. We NEVER use chemical fabric softeners. We use a laundry service for linens with a weekly pick up/collection from many B&Bs along our section of the Trail. Buying a packed lunch? We would prefer to REFILL your own water bottles.
